The song in the Tiny Desk AI video is "Outstanding" by The Gap Band, released in 1982. The meme uses the live version that the band's frontman, Charlie Wilson, performed at his NPR Tiny Desk concert in 2023.
The song: Outstanding (1982)
"Outstanding" is a slow-burning funk and R&B ballad by The Gap Band, the group Charlie Wilson fronted with his brothers. It became one of the band's signature songs and one of the most sampled R&B tracks of the decade.
The performance: Charlie Wilson at the Tiny Desk (2023)
NPR's Tiny Desk concerts film artists playing a short set behind a desk in NPR's Washington office. Charlie Wilson's set included "Outstanding", and the warmth of that performance, the band packed between the bookshelves, the grin and the saxophone solo, is what the AI meme copies shot for shot.
How it became the Tiny Desk AI meme
In October 2026 a TikTok creator used AI to replace the band with college football coaches whose teams had just lost. The parody spread quickly and turned into a format: put any group of people at the desk and let them sing "Outstanding". Read the full timeline on the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI page.
